Here at Dental Cube, we know that amongst the hustle and bustle of life, the dental health of your child can sometimes take the back seat on your to-do list. That’s why we’ve decided to put together a simple set of guidelines to help you keep their smile clean and your head clear!
Dental Health and The Teething Stage.
As soon as your little one’s first tooth appears, so does the risk of poor oral hygiene. Although tooth decay is quite uncommon in infants through their early years, it can be easily prevented through regular wiping of their baby teeth with a wet facecloth. As more teeth start to come up, look into purchasing a small, soft toothbrush. Turn brushing into a fun activity with some music, and start to build those good habits in your child early on!
Dental Health and Younger Children.
From the age of 18 months, up until the age of 10, your children’s teeth go through a hugely important period of growth and strengthening. It is vital that through these years, you are encouraging positive habits, such as brushing and flossing. Opt for a toothpaste which contains fluoride, and make sure to replace toothbrushes every 3 – 4 months.
With tooth decay affecting up to a quarter of children between the ages of 5 and 10 in Australia, it is also essential to minimise excessive sugar consumption, which can weaken the tooth’s enamel and increase the rate of decay. Avoid the consumption of sugary drinks such as juice or cordial before bed time, and try to reduce snacking on unhealthy sweets. We all know prevention is better than cure, so make sure to keep up with the recommended regular check-ups at the dentist, which should be spaced about 6 months apart.
